Python - Classes and Objects

Classes and objects allow code separation and isolation.

A class is like a blueprint for creating objects, class names are capitalized ex: MyClass

A class contains a function __init__() which is the "constructor" of the class, it will be called every time you instantiate a class. it can take a parameter self which refer to the instance of the initialized class.

A class instance is called an object

class Dog:
  def __init__(self, name):
    self.name = name # class attribute
    self.legs = 4

  def speak(self): # class method
    print(self.name + " says: Bark!")

my_dog = Dog('Yuki')
another_dog = Dog('Rover')

my_dog.speak() # Yuki says: Bark!
another_dog.speak() # Rover says: Bark!

As you can see my_dog.speak() has no arguments when called even though self is used in its definition, that's because python will use the variable before the . (my_dog) that calls the function, which is the instance of the class Dog
